Car Review: 2019 Kia Optima Si
Car Review: 2019 Kia Optima Si
Kia’s once large sedan contender has been overshadowed by the Stinger, itself an excellent and vastly underrated vehicle. The Optima, though, remains the hidden gem in the bigger sedan family and the updated 2019 Kia Optima Si still impresses. The test car provided comes at a cost of $33,390, paint at $595 for premium paint, making the test car $33,985 plus on-roads.

Some (Unreliable) Thoughts After Watching Dudes Go Car Shopping
Specifically Ace and Bala, documenting the whole process via Instagram Stories. The lovely Sara has not archived these for @ninetyonekz yet, because she’s been busy doing heroic work archiving ZaQ’s affection for his stepcats and also That One Recent Photoshoot With a Giant Paper Boat, so you will either have to head over to Instagram yourself for the evidence or trust me.
I did take a quick screenshot, though:
Tumblr media
Y’all know I get happy when I have actual prices to play with. 13 million KZT = €27,123 or US$27,461. It looks like the extra package bumps it up to 15.5 million KZT, or $32,745. Obviously prices are going to vary wildly and I don’t know enough context to know what kind of dealership culture reigns in Kazakhstan, whether the 13 million is a set price or a starting point for negotiations. But I did a quick glance around Autotrader and the prices I see for a new K5 (which is apparently the rebranded name of the Optima) range from $26,340 or a little bit over $37,000. And that’s where I am in Georgia; bump that price up a bit for higher costs of living, say in New York or California.
Why does this matter? Well, it doesn’t, I’m an obsessive nerd, but:
Tumblr media
(Source, from Our World in Data, natch.)
So the chart above is aggregate median data, and yes it obscures all sorts of inequalities, in both countries. But to indulge in some very crude economic analysis, the median Kazakhstani has about a quarter to a fifth of income to play with as the median American, and yet a Kia K5 in Almaty does not cost a quarter of what it would in Atlanta. It thereby follows that a Kia K5 occupies a different position relative to median Kazakhstani consumption than it does relative to median American consumption.
Two different directions I want to go in, thinking about this, and both of them have to do with Ace not being a median Kazakhstani consumer. (I’m 98% certain it’s Ace’s car-to-be, even with Bala in tow; the fan account weloveninetyone occasionally reblogs the guys’ Stories and adds captions I can put into Google Translate, God bless that person, and my understanding from those translated captions is that Ace sold the Mitsubishi stick-shift earlier this year and then a few days ago told Eaglez he was going car shopping and they would get to hear all about it. And this has nothing to do with the rest of the analysis but I have very few friends who would be willing to go out and car-shop with me for two days, and not just because I am a cranky and ruthless negotiator, two of my last three purchases have had the dealer sighing in despair at one point or another. Either Bala is a closer friend to Ace than I had previously assumed, or more of a mensch, or both.)
So Direction #1: their audience is still largely Kazakhstani. As happy as they are to hear from international fans, as much as they still likely want to expand their reach, the vast, vast majority of the people tuning into these Stories are Kazakhstani (and I’m also 98% sure Ace is speaking Kazakh, not Russian, in his intros). Which means that most of the audience is in the context of not having 13 million tenge to throw at a car any time soon. If you follow the particular economics of Ninety One’s interactions with fans, you’ll see that those prices are more adjusted for Kazakhstan’s relative smaller median incomes: I believe a ticket for the most recent concert cost 7,000 tenge, or about $14, which is about a quarter of what I paid for the last Korean idol pop concert I went to (Oh My Girl, at the beginning of 2019). The weloveninetyone account posted a list of everything fans collectively bought Ace as a birthday present, at the end of August, complete with prices, and it added up to about $200 total, which would be considered a poor showing from a Western pop fandom. But if there’s a certain mutual empathy between Ninety One and its fans, having Ace and Bala wander around shiny dealerships breaks the illusion a bit, doesn’t it? Even if they are saying, “You’re sharing this experience with us,” there may be only so much the fans can participate in being wealthy enough to contemplate a 13-million-tenge car.
I wrote about this some in the Ninety One Series: the idols / money / fans relationship is always going to be fraught. On the one hand, fans want idols to feel rewarded for what they do, and earn a living (which is why you will sometimes see people saying variations on “yeah get that sweet CF money bb” on Kpop subreddits). On the other hand, not too rewarded. Not wealthy enough to envy; not wealthy enough that wealth threatens to become a goal in itself. (This is a side point, but I wonder if J. K. Rowling’s insensitive remarks about trans women would sting less if she hadn’t made as much money off Harry Potter as she has.) Ninety One has been admirably forthright about what they’re making and how: ZaQ told Elle that annual revenue (note: not profit) is 7 billion tenge, or about $16 million. If you’re going to be the boy band that conquers the world, or at least your own home country, you ought to be able to make some damn cash in the process; if you don’t someone else will, as the cautionary tales of the Bay City Rollers or Menudo or Lou Pearlman’s groups would suggest. But usually, at least in Western fandoms, there’s a segment of consumers who will find the cash-making alienating, not heartening. I don’t know if that’s actually true for Kazakhstani Eaglez; I may be making wrong assumptions, in my ignorance.
But meanwhile (this is Direction #2) there’s another separate segment of music and music fandom in which talking about wealth and conspicuous consumption is part of the art: all those references to ice on the wrists, or “I can put you in first class,” or brand name-drops. (I put “Kia” into Genius lyrics search and got Childish Gambino: “Furniture custom, you shop at IKEA / Show Maserati, you whippin’ a Kia.”) And the members of Ninety One, who grew up on American hip-hop, know this as well as anyone; and that goes double for the guy who keeps wearing Air Jordan caps and big-logo purses. They’re taking at least some of their cues from American popular culture, but American popular culture is taking place in a completely different economic context--not to mention historical context, and I really don’t know how much Ninety One knows, for all their thoughtfulness, of how conspicuous consumption has sometimes been an expression of Black pride, and also a not-terrible financial strategy when more traditional wealth-building measures (bank accounts, house buying) were closed off. In a way, showing off their wealth is part of their job, but that’s only because of a set of historical developments that doesn’t quite apply to them.
(Unless they’re responding to an entirely different set of historical developments that does apply to them, which is my way of saying that conspicuous consumption in the post-Soviet countries has a whole different history, and I have no idea what approach, say, Skriptonit or Oxxxymiron or even Morgenshtern take towards brand-slinging. Russian-language hip-hop in general is a huge blind spot for me; I tend to assume it borrows a lot from American hip-hop, but I haven’t actually tested that assumption.)
We all communicate through brands now, and Ninety One seems to be sitting at this weird intersection of dialects, in which they test-drive a Hyundai Sonata and that might generate awe or pride or envy at home, and meanwhile on the other side of the world I’m saying to myself, “Aww! My mom had a Sonata.” And now I’m feeling cranky at myself for perpetuating this, trying to read sociological import into car shopping, when car brands are not reliable signals, and definitely should not be anything to bond over! As if I see a familiar brand and try to derive some parasocial affection from it, because I keep demanding some kind of parasocial affection from these particular dudes, even though they’re living in an unfamiliar part of the world and have the right to speak languages I don’t understand. But as much as anyone I have to step back and say I’m spinning stories to myself, for myself, and don’t know as much as I think I do. Who are they? What makes them happy? Are they doing good? Would we be friends? Trying to learn but spinning on and on in circles.

Updates:
- They don’t expect to get our car back to us till Tuesday at the earliest. 😕
- Our car was suspended in the air on a mechanic’s tool thing, so we can’t grab: (a) any of our face masks (all in the car), (b) any pronoun pins (all in the car), (c) our guitar or ukelele (to self soothe with), (d) our cape (for social events & for stimmy reasons), (e) our asthma inhaler, (f) all our bandaids, or (g) our walking staff (in the trunk. If we had been warned they needed to keep the car longer, we would’ve taken all of that OUT of the car, but no one communicated anything.
- Apparently the guy assigned to our car wasn’t at work today & left such vague shitty notes that no one could figure out what progress was made. Our car could be 10 minutes from done, or need a whole nother day or a week. No one knows.
- The apologetic clerk/front desk person left a note for the guy assigned to my car saying ‘hey idiot, call first thing on Tuesday to give SOME kind of update on progress’ (in less aggressive words obv)
- The front desk person saw how stressed & upset our parents were & we were, &...gave us a loaner car. (We took it to a local Kia dealership because they have mechanics & for replacing this engine part they’re the cheapest cost.) They apparently only have one on the whole lot, it’s a silver ‘stripped down model’/bottom package Kia Optima. Not a good color & a bit gutless (little torque & little horsepower). But it does have upgraded tech...because it’s a 2019. So we get blind spot sensors, Android Auto / Bluetooth tech, & a cute little ‘boo-doo-loo-doo-loo ☺’ noise as the car computer comes on & a slightly sadder noise as it shuts off. Yes I immediately said “hello there” aloud in response to it turning on because I was raised on Star Wars & because autistic hyper-empathy 😅. The seats are a bit cramped (clearly made for thinner people, not curvy, chubby, &/or muscular people; the edges are raised & curved in to tuck you in but not wide enough for me to be comfy), but it’s temporary so I guess that’s okay. It’s basically ours until they give us our car back (hopefully Tuesday but we’ll see).
- Loaner car has a few rules - no dogs (poor Rowan 😢 (/lightheartedly dramatic)), no smoking (we wouldn’t anyway), & return it with a full tank (but it gets almost 30 miles per gallon & currently has a 460 mile range so that’ll likely be easy & not too expensive).
- They apparently give this loaner car out “by necessity” (basically person with most need for a car gets it, or most need according to the front desk people; suspect that last user had kids because seats have dirt on them even after Kia tried cleaning them), but because of how poorly we were communicated with & because Minimum Wage Worker™ (me/us) needs to get to work so we don’t get fired, uh....they made a slight exception in this case. So that’s nice ig. No relying on parents & not totally screwed.
- The front desk person indicated several times that the guy assigned to our car broke several rules (no backup worker if he calls out that can communicate with us, vague unhelpful notes), so it’s possible they’ll slightly lower the cost in apology. For a $600 fee (for a minimum wage worker to pay), anything lower is helpful, so...we’ll see ig.
- Parents decided to act like “normal”/“good” parents (for reputation reasons really, but still) & told the front desk person they’re “very disappointed” with the lack of clarity & communication, especially with how much stress we were caused. They got profuse apologies apparently.
- We’re never letting this guy work on our car again. We’ll ask for someone better if we ever go back.
- Made it home alive from work.
- We were apparently so visibly stressed (& borderline in meltdown, with self harmful stims) that a manager & two coworkers asked if we were okay. We said no & explained about car. They agree that this employee did a stupid (/somewhat lighthearted) & that we should’ve had a lot more communication & clarity through this process.
- They tried to call us at work....at 2pm. We told them work began at 1pm & we needed to leave by 12:45p. Front desk person complained that we didn’t pick up the phone when they “tried to contact” us. (¿as if it’s our fault we’re at work & can’t?) Mother decided to defend that we already told them we’d be AT work by 1pm & would likely get fired if we answered the phone.
- Finally hit a breaking point with sudden changes of plans & expectations where we actually felt the effect. Normally we dissociate, but we ended up crying before work & getting a dissociated meltdown at work, mostly because Sudden Change™ + No Warning And No Communication™ = Brain Overload™. We hate last minute changes of plans but thought it was ‘in a normal way’ till today. More accidental confirmation that we’re autistic. 🤷‍♂️
- Mother gave us vodka (a little bit) hoping to make us chill (for not good reasons but—). It worked somewhat. Now dissociated & numb because that’s how vodka affects us.
- Managed to resist unalive ideation & self harm impulses so far.
- We’re gonna go to bed & hope tomorrow is less overwhelming.
(Also, as a note - they legitimately don’t actually understand, it wasn’t just anger. Especially because mom was referring to getting surgery & being unable to drive & having to “allow” dad to drive her everywhere. But she doesn’t feel at home, independent, & safe in her car. It’s JUST a car to her. For us, it’s a safe place to escape the ab*se we deal with on the daily. It’s a place to decompress & feel our feelings. It’s never been just a car. It’s home. So there’s a much more important & heavy emotional tie that she doesn’t understand, & that they don’t get when we try to explain (in part because we can’t admit they’re ab*sive to their face so there’s missing context but also in part because they don’t care to understand).)
~
Thank you to everyone who sent (messages, reblogs) well wishes, validated our feelings, sent reassurance &/or offered a space to vent & feel our emotions.
We in part posted here because we can’t guarantee someone will see it & didn’t want to burden someone with our “childish” emotions & overwhelm, but now that we’re calmer it’s easier to realize it was valid (¿no communication about MY car? wtf. ¿negligence from an employee? wtf. ¿sudden changes of plans that could’ve gotten us fired? wtf.) & not stupid. I’m relieved it was well received.
~a very drained & fatigued Ace
“I get it”
No the fuck you don’t. (/angry at parents)
~
Our car is still in the shop - it’s been over a day. We gave them until noon today so we could still go to work.
((Needed the power steering pump replaced. There were only 3 cars when we arrived - dropped off 9:30am yesterday, now 1pm today & still.....))
...Still no car.
We called like WTF at 12:10p. (It’s now 12:45.) They promised to send out an “urgent” memo & get someone to call me back. Still nothing.
((Phone calls are extremely difficult for us - autism, ADHD, going mute on the phone - but I got angry enough to try.))
So I got angry.
I feel betrayed & pissed off. ¿Is that stupid? Maybe, but it’s not just a car.
My car isn’t just a car.
It’s independence. It’s safety. It’s freedom. It’s HOME.
Yet our parents tell us to stop overreacting & to calm down & to ‘not take out our emotions om others’ (we never were, we said “this is fucking stupid, I shouldn't have to worry about if I’ll get MY car back”) & that our anger is unfounded. They’re trying to “logic” their way past our emotions. (They’re also just plain gaslighting us but that’s its own issue—)
It doesn’t help that we’re also hyper-empathetic about our car so there’s concern that he’s scared & lonely that we can’t make stop. 😕
I told our dad “¿would you just let me feel my emotions for once? let me be angry” & he legit said no & kept arguing.
So we cried on the way to work (dad drove us) because he spent the entire way lecturing us on emotions & how we’re being unreasonable, even though HE’s the one who lashes out with his feelings & is unreasonable all the time, not us.
G*ds forbid we express our emotions even for a minute. G*ds forbid we put our emotions into words. (/sarcasm)
We’re now at work early, chugging an energy drink to numb ourselves & dissociate because Lucca & I (Ace) are suicidal but I don’t want us to actually die.
We’ll be at work for ~6 hours, spending most our energy masking & trying not to unalive. ✌

Best Memorial Day Car Deals for 2020: Huge Markdowns on These New Rides
We’re experts on a lot here at MotorTrend, but when it comes to data-driven analyses on the best new car deals, we leave it to the pros at IntelliChoice. For more than 30 years, IntelliChoice (a part of the MotorTrend Group) has been honing its craft, making the lives of car buyers easier by researching the best certified pre-owned programs, best new-car overall values, and the best deals.
IntelliChoice shared with us the best car deals around the country this Memorial Day weekend so we can share them with you.
More Memorial Day new car deals:
Best Memorial Day SUV Deals for 2020: Sport Utility Value
2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV
Chevrolet is offering a massive $8,500 rebate on its electric hatchback. At nearly 22 percent of the Bolt’s base price, the discount is proportionally the largest on our list. The car was impressive enough to take home our 2017 Car of the Year award when new and has even more range for 2020. Its ride quality isn’t the best in the segment and it won’t charge as quickly as a Hyundai Kona EV but those flaws are much easier to swallow with an $8,500 discount.
2020 Jaguar XF and XF Sportbrake
There’s nothing quite like a handsome British luxury sedan, and Jaguar has big deals on the XF this weekend (and until June 1). You can score $9,000 off four-cylinder XF variants and $11,000 off an XF S with the supercharged V-6. We adore the simple, elegant lines of this Jag, and its taut ride and excellent steering make it one of the most fun cars in its segment. Oh, and you may be able to negotiate quite a bit more off the Sportbrake wagon.
2020 Kia Optima
Among Kia’s offerings this weekend are significant discounts on the soon-to-be-replaced 2020 Optima. For Memorial Day weekend through the first of June, Kia has $3,500 on the hood of the Optima LX and SE or $4,000 off the Optima EX, S, and SX. Although the current, fourth-gen Optima doesn’t feel like a premium step forward the way its predecessor did, the midsize sedan still offers a quiet comfortable ride, great infotainment, and strong value, especially with a choice discount.
Dodge Challenger
Dodge is offering discounts across the board for its old-school muscle car. Everything from the V-6 AWD Challenger GT to the 797-hp Hellcat Redeye Widebody sees big rebates, from $3,050 off the 305-hp GT to $7,970 off the 797-hp Redeye variants (get it?). We appreciate the way the Challenger knows what it is: a big, heavy, power-forward muscle car that looks the absolute business. Especially with a fat discount, we’d love to add one of these to the driveway.
Chrysler 300
If you’re in the market for a Chrysler 300, you can score a $3,250 rebate this weekend on the comfy cruiser. It was much improved with the addition of an eight-speed automatic for 2018 but the interior is as dated as the second-gen 300’s 2011 introduction would suggest. That said, it’s one of the last large American sedans and a few thousand on the hood certainly sweetens the deal.
Kia Sedona
Families need discounts as much as anyone and Kia is offering $4,000 off its Sorento minivan. It’s one of the more stylish vans on the market, inside and out, and it proved exceptionally usable during our year-long loan a few years back. Sure, the newly revealed 2021 Toyota Sienna looks impressive, but Toyota isn’t the automaker putting an extra $4,000 in your pocket.
Acura ILX
The ILX is already Acura’s least expensive offering and it becomes even more accessible with the $2,200 rebate available this Memorial Day weekend and running through June 1. Acura gave the ILX a refresh for 2019 with restyled sheetmetal, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and a suite of active safety equipment. With the help of that rebate, this is a great opportunity to join the luxury car landscape without spending too much cash.
Fiat 124 Spider
Fiat is offering a $2,000 rebate on the purchase of a 124 Spider. Yes, it’s a rebodied Mazda MX-5 with a turbocharged Fiat engine, but that’s a recipe for a pretty enjoyable roadster. The recently updated Miata is compelling, but you’d never catch us complaining about a ride in a front-engine, rear-driver convertible with a manual transmission.

Subaru Legacy 3.6R 2019 the end of an era
Subaru Legacy 3.6R 2019 the end of an era
Tumblr media
Subaru Legacy 3.6R 2019 the end of an era
At the Chicago Motor Show, a few weeks ago, Subaru unveiled an all-new Subaru Legacy for the 2020 model year. It was announced what many expected: the six-cylinder engine would be replaced by a four-cylinder turbo. Once upon a time, sedans The mid-size sedan segment has taken a strange direction in recent years. Formerly the most popular and innocuous in the industry, these cars have become strangely transformed into rare and mysterious objects because of the dominance of SUVs. Today, when a sedan is unveiled, it's almost an event, as if we had just launched a sports car. And builders benefit by injecting more design, more sportiness and more technology in their sedans in the hope of regaining the market shares they lost.
Tumblr media
Subaru Legacy 3.6R 2019 the end of an era
It was therefore inevitable for Subaru to enhance the look of its sedan. Especially since Nissan announced the addition of the all-wheel drive in its Altima, the Legacy is no longer alone in its niche. But even if a new Legacy arrives next year, Subaru has still made some updates to the Subaru Legacy 2019 model. All versions now come standard with the EyeSight driving aid package, including adaptive cruise control , emergency braking in the event of a collision risk, a lane change detector as well as assistance in maintaining the trajectory.
Tumblr media
Subaru Legacy 3.6R 2019 the end of an era
Subaru hybrid The 2.5-liter flatbed four-cylinder engine that powers entry-level models still produces 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. The six-cylinder - nicknamed H6 - 3.6-liter develops 256 horsepower and a torque of 247 lb-ft. It is four horses less than the four-cylinder turbo that will replace it. So we understand the decision of Subaru. Subaru hybrid Only a continuously variable automatic transmission is available on the range. The all-wheel drive comes, unsurprisingly, as standard. retailing $ 38,560 before shipping and preparation costs. The purr of the six Turbo engines have shown that they can be both more powerful and more fuel efficient than higher displacement engines, but nothing beats the sound and smoothness of a six-cylinder. Especially a six-cylinder flat, a tradition at Subaru, which allows the manufacturer to offer a much more efficient all-wheel drive than the competition. The reason is simple: a Boxer-type engine can be positioned lower in the engine compartment, reducing the vehicle's center of gravity and making it a better-anchored car on the ground, inevitably increasing traction. This is also what makes the Legacy a sedan much more interesting than its rivals, even if its design is a little harmless and that its interior is simple. The designers have tried to add a touch of sportiness to the 3.6R with bumpers a little more aggressive and two big exhaust pipes in the back. Nevertheless, it blends into the mass as it is subtle. It's a bit like that. the defect of the 3.6R. It seems that Subaru wanted to market a sports sedan, but it did not dare enough. With such a beefy engine that emits a sound so satisfactory while having a good dose of low-end torque, not to mention a smoothness of operation impeccable, all, coupled with an all-wheel drive so well thought out, we would have expected to be able to compete with a Honda Accord Sport, a Toyota Camry XSE V6 or a Mazda 6 Signature. Alas, even with the six-cylinder under the bonnet, the Legacy achieves the 0-100 km / h in 7.1 seconds, making it a sedan "sport" not much faster than the entry declinations range of competition.
Tumblr media
Subaru Legacy 3.6R 2019 the end of an era
A curious mixture Maybe if the Subaru Legacy 3.6R was equipped with a manual gearbox, as in the past, or a conventional automatic transmission, it would succeed in thrilling the hearts of enthusiasts. But that does not seem to be the manufacturer's priority, as Subaru has instead opted for a CVT. In his defense, the CVT box works well ... for a CVT. But on a model with the letter "R" stamped on his chest, the duo just does not work. The elastic effect and reaction times of the box prevent the motor from performing. At least, in the snow, the Legacy is sublime. As soon as you push your accelerator out of a turn on a snowy surface, the rear slips subtly, just enough to rotate the car safely. In short, regardless of the surface, the Subaru Legacy gives its occupants a feeling of confidence, a quality that allows it to attract a loyal clientele despite its poor acceleration. For the rest, the cabin of the Legacy remains spacious and well assembled, without anything really distinctive. Its back seat is comfortable and its Starlink multimedia system is beyond reproach. It is clear, easy to understand and physical controls are welcome in winter when wearing gloves. And with a trunk that can accommodate up to 425 liters of space, the Legacy is positioned between a Accord (473 liters) and a Camry (399 liters), making it one of the most versatile sedans in the segment.
Tumblr media
Subaru Legacy 3.6R 2019 the end of an era
In short, if the idea of a full-power car powered by a six-cylinder atmospheric challenges you, know that there is not much time before the Subaru Legacy 3.6R disappears. The good news is that your dealer may offer you a good discount.

Comfort -The Legacy is a spacious and comfortable sedan, both front and rear Performances -Although the six-cylinder engine delivers a nice sound and has a good dose of low-end torque, the Legacy 3.6R is not very fast. Multimedia system -Starlink is among the best systems in the industry because of its clear, easy-to-grasp and user-friendly interface. Driving approval -The Legacy is surprisingly fun to drive, especially in the snow. Its solid chassis and low center of gravity help a lot. General appreciation -The idea of a Subaru powered by an atmospheric six-cylinder is certainly enticing, but the end product is rather disappointing.

Testing Cars That Help Drivers Steer Clear of Pedestrians
Almost 6,300 pedestrians were killed in 2018 in the United States, the highest number since 1990, federal officials said this month. Collision-avoidance systems on many new vehicles could reduce that toll, but there are significant differences in how well they work, according to new tests.
Such systems scan the road ahead — sometimes with a camera, radar or lasers. If an object is detected, a computer can issue a warning and ultimately apply the brakes.
“We think these kinds of systems — as they become more prevalent in the fleet — will make a difference in reducing pedestrian fatalities,” said David Harkey, the president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which conducted the tests.
But the tests, conducted on 16 midsize sedans, found a wide range of abilities among the systems. Some cars stopped before the pedestrian dummy could be hit, others were slower to react. In one case, the vehicle did not reduce its speed and hit a child dummy.
[As Halloween approaches, beware urban legends. And cars.]
The test results were released Tuesday, one week after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said pedestrian deaths in 2018 increased 3.4 percent over 2017. The institute released its results before Halloween, one of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrians.
According to the federal statistics, 76 percent of the 2018 fatalities occurred after dark and 38 percent of the victims “had some alcohol in their systems.” About three-quarters were not crossing at intersections.
[After a rise in deaths, New York will add 250 miles of protected bike lanes.]
Unfortunately, collision-avoidance systems work best in daylight, Mr. Harkey said, but automakers are working on systems that perform better at night.
The institute based its ratings on how much each vehicle was able to reduce its speed in each of three tests:
■ An adult walking into the street as a vehicle approaches at 12 and then 25 miles per hour. There are no parked vehicles or signs obstructing the view of the pedestrian.
■ A child running into the street from behind parked cars as a vehicle approaches at 12 and then 25 m.p.h. This was described as the most challenging test.
■ An adult walking along a road, facing away from traffic as the vehicle approaches at 25 and then 37 m.p.h.
The institute ranked vehicles in four categories: superior, advanced, basic and “no credit.”
Six of the 16 got a “superior” rating, which means they either avoided hitting the dummy or slowed enough that the institute predicted a greatly reduced chance of severe injury. They are the 2019 Audi A4, 2019-20 BMW 3 Series, 2019-20 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, 2019-20 Nissan Maxima, 2020 Subaru Outback and 2019 Volvo S60.
The Maxima was the top performer, the institute said. In each test, it avoided hitting the pedestrian.
Mr. Harkey said the institute was pleased that many of the vehicles did well and that two of the top performers — the Nissan Maxima and Subaru Outback — were not luxury models.
But he said it was “a little bit disappointing” that the two domestic models did not fare better.
The 2019-20 Chevrolet Malibu was ranked “basic” regardless of whether it was equipped with either of two available systems: a camera focused on the road or an optional camera supplemented with radar.
The 2019-20 Ford Fusion was in the “no credit” category for vehicles that failed to slow “significantly.” Indeed, the institute said the Fusion did not slow at all for the test involving the child.
The 2019 Hyundai Sonata and 2019 Kia Optima were also in the “no credit” category.
A Ford spokeswoman, Monique Brentley, noted that the 2019 Fusion’s collision-prevention system received a superior rating in a different test for its ability to avoid a stationary target simulating a car and that the automaker “remains committed to designing vehicles that provide high levels of safety for our customers.”
Miles Johnson, a Hyundai spokesman, said the automaker “will carefully analyze the I.I.H.S. data to determine if there are any steps we can take.” Officials from Kia did not respond to a request for comment.
One thing that might confuse consumers is that some models have two versions of collision-avoidance systems.
For example, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class with an optional system was ranked superior. The same model equipped with the standard system fell into the “basic category.”
The BMW 3-Series also has a standard and a more expensive, optional system. The institute said it was surprised to see that the standard system was ranked superior, while the optional system was less effective and ranked one notch down, in the advanced category.
The models that were ranked in the advanced category were the 2019-20 BMW 3 Series with the optional system, 2019-20 Honda Accord, 2019-20 Lexus ES 350, 2019 Mazda 6, 2019-20 Nissan Altima, 2019-20 Tesla Model 3 and 2019-20 Toyota Camry.
The systems were standard on the six luxury cars tested as well as six of the other 10 models.
Mr. Harkey said the good news for consumers was that automakers were increasingly putting collision-avoidance systems on more models and making them standard equipment.
“There are some very good options out there at a variety of price ranges,” he said.

The 15 Most Important Cars of the Decade
As we say goodbye to 2019, we also bid farewell to the 2010s. There’s no doubt that the last 10 years have produced some truly influential cars, from electric vehicles with practical driving range to SUVs that helped shape the modern automotive landscape. But which cars from the outgoing decade are the most significant? Keep reading to find out what the editors of MotorTrend picked as the most important cars of the decade.
Tesla Model S
It would be entirely inconsistent if we did not recognize the Tesla Model S’ contribution to the motoring world; after all, we did name it the Ultimate Car of the Year during our 70th Annual MotorTrend retrospective. Seriously, can you think of a company and car that has had more of an impact around the world, in the last 10 years, than Tesla and its Model S? Consider the doors it opened and the markets it created, with its range, performance, and game-changing supercharger network. The impact of that vehicle still resonates when you look at more recent competitors like the Porsche Taycan. –Ed Loh
Volvo XC90
This has undeniably been the decade of the crossover. New entries have flooded the market in all sizes and price ranges, but Volvo’s three-row XC90—our 2016 SUV of the Year—was among the most forward-looking of them all. Its Thomas Ingenlath design marked the stolid brand’s pivot away from sensible-n-safe to safe-sexy. It marked the debut of the highly flexible Scalable Product Architecture platform that has underpinned most new Volvos since, and its daring Drive-E 2.0-liter-four-cylinder-only powertrain strategy has proven to be a savvy one, offering turbocharging (T5), turbo + supercharging (T6), and turbo + supercharging + plug-in-hybrid (T8) options that deliver increasing performance and even economy/ecology at the top of the price ladder. And the T8 model’s jumbo battery has allowed the XC90 to serve as an autonomy development platform both inside Volvo and with third party developers. This alone should ensure this mid-teens crossover’s place in the history books well into the next decade. –Frank Markus
2011 Hyundai Sonata
Korean automakers landed on everyone’s radar because of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. When it debuted for the 2011 model year, it shocked the automotive industry with its daring, coupe-like exterior styling dubbed Fluidic Sculpture, which has since inspired Hyundai vehicles that followed it. That long list includes the latest Sonata with its cool LED daytime running lights that integrate into the chrome accent strips on the hood.
The 2011 Sonata and its sibling, the Kia Optima, were also the first to embrace the downsizing trend with a lineup of two four-cylinder engines and a hybrid variant. It ditched the V-6 in favor of a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4, making the Sonata one of the first to go all in on forced induction. Hybrid variants also bucked the trends of the day, offering more power and a conventional six-speed automatic transmission instead of a CVT.
Together with Hyundai’s long warranties and build quality improvements, the Hyundai Sonata was the risk that led to plenty of rewards. Hyundai Motor Group and its three marques are now respected as formidable competitors, and they’ve even hired a dream team of designers and engineers to keep their momentum going and expand into the luxury and performance segments with compelling entries. –Stefan Ogbac
Tesla Model 3
You can argue that the Tesla Model S could be the best of the decade—it was the first electric vehicle to win MotorTrend’s Car of the Year award, and recently we named it Ultimate Car of the Year during a special comparison for our 70th Anniversary. But the Tesla Model 3 has given Tesla the ability to grow into a mainstream brand, and it continues to be the electric model to beat in terms of range and price. Even if you take away its electric appeal, the Model 3 is the best sport sedan you can buy today, and we proved that in a comparison earlier this year, where it beat the Genesis G70 (our 2019 COTY) and the new BMW 3 Series.
The Model 3 also took Tesla to a different level—it’s estimated to sell more units this year than the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4 combined. And the fact that almost all automakers are going electric with the Model 3 as their target is impressive. –Miguel Cortina
Porsche 911
Familiarity breeds contempt. It’s become fashionable in some quarters to decry the 911 as a car trapped by its history. Others denounce it for changing too much; for getting bigger, more comfortable, the clattery yowl of the iconic flat-six now suffering the indignity of being muffled by turbochargers—even in cars with no Turbo badging.
The 911 started the decade as the 997. Then came the 991.1 and the 991.2. Now we have the 992. This cadence is remarkable for a car that went through past decades with only minor tweaks.
The 992 is as beautifully rendered a 911 as has ever been built. The exterior design, its surfacing and detailing and proportion, is simply sublime. The powertrains—we have only experienced the 992 in 379-hp Carrera and 443-hp Carrera S trim so far—are muscular and flexible and responsive. There’s more precision in the chassis than ever. The steering is delicate and precise, the transmission smooth and alert, and there’s a lovely nuanced feel through the brake pedal. It flows down the road like quicksilver.
Immortal, eternal, and still bloody brilliant, the Porsche 911 is a car that has stayed true to itself for the whole decade. –Angus MacKenzie
2011 Chevrolet Volt
“This automobile is a game-changer,” we said about the original Chevrolet Volt when it became our 2011 Car of the Year. Years before Tesla made anything the average car buyer could afford, Chevrolet picked up where the second-generation Prius left off. Even if the Volt suffered laughably poor resale value as Chevrolet reduced the price more than once, the car helped advance the “could we live with a plug-in or EV?” conversation for an increasing number of people who may have been put off by the low overall range of full EVs of the early 2010s. The Volt may be gone, but its influence lives on in the engineering work that went into the excellent Bolt EV, our 2017 Car of the Year and another important car on this list. –Zach Gale
Volkswagen’s TDI Diesel Lineup
While I’ll grant you that a case can easily be made for the Tesla Model S being the most significant car of the decade, I’d argue there’s another automaker’s entire lineup that was equally important—Volkswagen’s 2010-2015 TDI diesel lineup.
I’m sure you’re all well-versed in VW’s “clean” diesel emissions cheating scheme, but for those who aren’t, the short of it is Volkswagen programed its diesel engines to activate its emission controls while in a laboratory environment, but not in the real world. This may have improved acceleration and fuel economy for its diesel owners, but it poured, according to a study performed by “Environmental Research Letters,” an excess of 10 million kilograms of NOx into our atmosphere and had a societal impact of $450 million over the vehicles’ sales period. That’s just in the U.S. alone, where VW’s TDI sales paled in comparison to its European diesel footprint.
The impact of Volkswagen’s diesel emissions scandal has been far-reaching. Further research showed that other automakers’ diesel engines produced more emissions in the real world than they did in laboratories. As a result, federal oversight of the few new diesel engines on the market has increased significantly, delaying their release.
“Dieselgate” can also take credit for killing the myth of “clean diesel.” Since the scandal, many automakers have abandoned light-duty diesel engines. Dieselgate is also directly responsible for VW’s sudden shift to electric cars—as seen in its new ID lineup—and the new nationwide Electrify America charging network, which VW is paying for with $2 billion in fines the feds leveled against it. Not only has VW’s diesel emissions scandal had a large impact on the automotive world in the 2010s, but it’ll continue to do so for the foreseeable future. –Christian Seabaugh
The Google Car
Not one was ever sold. None ever left the confines of Google’s Silicon Valley campus so far as I know. Only a handful of people have ever even gotten a ride. Never mind all that. When, in five or 10 or 20 years, autonomous cars become a reality and you sleep through every drive without even a steering wheel to lean on, it will have all started with the Google Car. Forget what it looks like or what it means for conventional, manually driven vehicles. Autonomous cars will change the way the world moves, and this car will have started the movement. –Scott Evans
Tesla Roadster
Tesla, obviously. That’s the unavoidable, instinct-answer to our question at hand; forgive my lack of creativity. Seven years ago, the wavy Model S ruptured the premium luxury car market; three years ago, the Model 3 was a lesser technological aftershock, but more damaging to the norms by landing closer to the middle of the market’s bullseye. However, the stage for both was set by a now rarely seen two-seater that many probably confuse for an old Lotus Elise.
Remember when electric cars were golf carts? Tesla’s original Roadster (introduced in 2008 but trading through 2012) had some wondering if a “1” had been left off its 3.7-second 0-60 time when we published a December 2009 test of a 2010 example. While it also handled and stopped better than a golf cart (0.98 lateral g; 113 feet from 60 mph) it was that fiendish acceleration that had car journalists pausing over their keyboards for more hyperbolic adjectives (“black-out,” “face-warping,” “retina-flattening”). The Roadster was pre-over-the-air updates and Autopilot; Supercharger network and simulated whoopy-cushion sound effects. But with its amazing 244-mile range and what happened after you stamped down your right foot, it not only got the cognoscenti’s attention, but started to flip the perception of the EV from silly to sexy. It also supplied Elon Musk’s tiny crew some critical cash, and Musk himself with early practice in tight-roping the financial near-death moments that he’s become a Zen master of surviving. I can’t count the number of people since 2010 who have confidently told me “Tesla can’t last.” Now, the question is whether the industry can survive the changes Tesla has wrought. All of which started with a Roadster that looked like a Lotus. –Kim Reynolds
2011 Nissan Leaf
We all love Tesla, but it was the Nissan Leaf that paved the way for the mass-produced electric car. It arrived in the U.S. market in 2010, and proved to the public that an electric car can be comfortable and relatively affordable. It would go on to become a best-seller in the worldwide EV market, and it has improved greatly over time. While the 2011 model offered only 73 miles of range, the current Leaf can travel up to 226 miles on a single charge. –Kelly Lin
Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat
Did the Challenger Hellcat do much to advance the state of the art? Not really. But it was the first shot fired in a new horsepower war where 700 ponies is the minimum cost of entry. Dodge threw down the gauntlet when it announced that the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat produced 707 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. Its output crushed the 662 hp of the previous muscle car benchmark, the S197 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and ignited an arms race that recently gave us other instant classics like the 755-hp C7 Corvette ZR1 and the 760-hp 2020 Shelby GT500. Plus, just think about how old the Challenger is. On sale since 2008, the Challenger was already ancient by the time the Hellcat came out—and yet it was one of the most talked about cars that year. Dodge didn’t squander the buzz it created, either. It carried the momentum from the Challenger Hellcat into the equally hyped, limited-production, drag-strip-ready Challenger SRT Demon, which made up to 840 hp on race gas. And for those that missed out on the Demon, there’s now the 797-hp Hellcat Redeye. The Hellcat not only kept the Challenger relevant far beyond a normal car’s life cycle, but it made the twenty-teens a great decade for horsepower junkies. –Alex Nishimoto
2018 Lincoln Navigator
For years, the Navigator was the only decent vehicle in Lincoln’s lineup. But Ford used the 2018 Navigator as the tent pole to reinvent itself as an icon of American luxury. The fourth-generation Navigator is Lincoln’s highly profitable flagship and set a tone for the vehicles that have followed to equal critical acclaim. Navigator also showed Ford’s ability to differentiate its higher-end luxury models from their Ford counterparts with appreciably nicer interiors, elegant styling, and more performance with unique powertrains. –Alisa Priddle
Chevrolet Bolt
The Tesla Model S may have redefined the public’s perception of what an electric car should be. But the Chevrolet Bolt—our 2017 Car of the Year—changed the public’s perception about what an affordable electric car could be. Sure, there was the Nissan Leaf in that budget-EV space, but the original incarnation was saddled with the same old range anxiety. Enter the Bolt, years ahead of the Tesla Model 3, at a price point the average commuter could afford, with a legitimate 230 miles of range, and zippy performance and handling that would be laudable in a gasoline-powered Euro econo-hatchback. Sadly, GM sells 25 times as many Silverado pickups as Bolts, so there wasn’t the corporate push to make the Bolt a household name. That said, if you are a tree-hugger on a budget, there are screaming deals to be found on the OG EV. –Mark Rechtin
Cadillac CTS-V Wagon w/Manual
I will never forget walking into a Cadillac party during the 2010 New York auto show and seeing Cadillac’s 556-horsepower station wagon in the metal for the first time. How could it be real? There was Bob Lutz—in my mind an unlit Cohiba clenched in his teeth and calling me “Pinhead!”—and the lust-worthy, sales-proof Caddy dream machine made a bit of sense. The car guys had taken over the asylum. How else to explain such a unicorn of a unicorn? Did I mention the CTS-V Wagon could be had with a six-speed manual transmission?
Story time: MotorTrend was lent a long-term manual V Wagon for a year and I was the lucky son of a female dog assigned its stewardship (I still owe you one, Angus!). What no one knew then, though I’ve since been told, is that a certain employee at Cadillac had baked two long-term press cars into the CTS-V Wagon’s business plan. This person argued/bet that if MT and our chief rival were each given a long-termer, doing so would triple sales. Now, sales targets were low—500 units being the initial estimate—but since Cadillac was already making the Sport Wagon and the CTS-V, blending the two together didn’t cost much and they didn’t have to sell many to justify the car. Guess what? Cadillac sold over 2,000 CTS-V Wagons. And over 500 of them were row-your-owns. The bet paid off, accounting for over 10 percent of all second-gen CTS-V sales. Do I mind being used like that? Not an iota!
Sad news for Cadillac is that it’s been downhill since then. Not just in terms of sales but in terms of cars that car people care about. Yes, the current CTS-V is outstanding. Thing is, with just one body style sales are nowhere near the second-gen car—about 6,000 total have left dealer lots. For many enthusiasts the V Wagon is the last Cadillac they loved. For a few, they’re paying more for a used one than the car cost when new. Name one other Cadillac made this past decade you can say that about. I’ll wait. –Jonny Lieberman
Ford Mustang Mach-E
There are lots of good reasons to drive an electric car. Looking cool and having fun aren’t usually among them. Tesla cracked that code long ago, infusing panache and performance in its cars from the first Model S. I’d been waiting since then for another brand to do the same. Just in time to make the decade, Ford did with the Mustang Mach-E.
Arguments about what the Mach-E is not are more ephemeral than what it is. Whatever you think about its namesake worthiness, it represents a moment for car enthusiasts, electric vehicles, and the industry. It’s the first non-Tesla EV desirable for reasons beyond fossil fuel divestment—namely, looking cool and having fun. It proves that mass-market EVs can have those traits, and that optimizing for every inch of range need not be their objective. And it shows how revolution can spark from within a legacy, no matter how storied or stodgy.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is important because it’s not only a culmination of the past decade, but a harbinger of what’s to come from the next. Our future will be as silent as it will be fun. –Alex Leanse

Auto Insurance on the Rise: 10 Most Expensive Vehicles to Insure
Auto Insurance on the Rise: 10 Most Expensive Vehicles to Insure The Tesla Model X is the most expensive vehicle in America to insure. New cars, trucks and utility vehicles aren’t getting any cheaper in the U.S. The average monthly payment for a new vehicle exceeds $550 a month and the loans buyers take out for those shiny new machines are getting longer too. Adding to that pain is the fact that new vehicles are more costly to insure as well. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, insurance premiums rose more than 20% between 2011 and 2018. The national average in the U.S. for insurance is $1,427 annually. With everyone looking for ways to lower their monthly payouts for vehicles, it helps to know what factors impact insurance costs. In most states, those include the driver’s age, driving record and where he or she lives. However, the type of vehicle being insured may be the biggest determining factor. (Jeep Takes Top Spot Again on American-Made Index) Though there are some general guidelines one can follow, such as a sports car is going to cost more to insure than a midsize sedan, it’s not safe to assume anything. Insurance companies also take the average insurance claim payment into account when determining premiums. Dodge’s latest snarling beast is the 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody. The more it costs to fix a vehicle, the more they charge consumers. For models with a higher average insurance claim payment, insurers almost always transfer the higher expected costs to the consumer. This is also true in reverse: lower payouts usually means lower payments. So website 24/7 Wall Street compiled a list of the 10 most expensive vehicles to insure in the U.S. and Tesla fans aren’t going to be happy. The top two vehicles are Tesla’s. The list includes: Tesla Model X 4WD ($1,909) Tesla Model S 4WD ($1,866) Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4dr LWB ($1,783) Mitsubishi Lancer ($1,556) BMW 4 Series two door ($1,485) Dodge Charger Hemi ($1,475) Kia Optima Hybrid ($1,475) Scion/Toyota FR-S/86 series ($1,445) Chevy Camaro two door ($1,402) Dodge Challenger ($1,399) Other vehicles consumers can expect to pay more than $1,300 annually to insure included the Infiniti Q50 two door, Lexus IS 200T four door, Chrysler 200, Land Rover Range Rover four-door 4WD, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Ford Mustang, Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan Maxima. (New Vehicle Sales Expected to Drop in June) The Camaro is one of the 10 most expensive vehicles to insure. To determine the 25 cars with the highest insurance costs, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data on insurance claim payments made by insurers by make and model from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit research organization funded by auto insurers. The costs include six types of insurance: collision, property damage, comprehensive, personal injury, medical payment, and bodily injury. The model that is most expensive to insure has the highest overall average cost to the insurer per year. On the flip side, there are plenty of new vehicles that are much less expensive to insure. Of course, they cost less to repair, are generally involved in fewer accidents and have fewer associated costs, which keeps the insurance premium down. The top five cheapest are: Subaru Outback 4WD with Eyesight Honda CR-V Acura RDX Subaru Forest 4WD with Eyesight Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible (Looking for a New Car Deal? New or used? These cars will help you decide
If you’re on the fence about buying a brand-new or preowned vehicle, consider comparing a new model to its lightly used equivalent to help you make a choice.
Auto research site iSeeCars.com has compiled the top 10 cars to buy in each case, which identify the largest potential savings on used cars and vehicles where it could be worth paying just a little extra to be the first owner.
Based on seven million recent car sales, the findings show that the average one-year-old car costs 23 percent less than when sold new, but these savings stretch up to nearly 40 percent for the following mix of vehicles.
Ford’s off-road-capable Expedition is a clear choice to buy used rather than new when it comes to price.
The Ford Expedition full-size SUV has the greatest price difference at 38.5 percent, or $24,690, while other SUVs that may enable you to save big include the Infiniti QX80 and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. There are six sedans to think about, led by the Chevrolet Impala, as well as the Kia Sedona minivan.
Top cars to buy used over new
Includes percentage and dollar price differences 1. Ford Expedition, -38.5 percent, $24,690 2. Kia Sedona, -37.8 percent, $12,918 3. Chevrolet Impala, -36.4 percent, $11,837 4. Infiniti QX80, -34.9 percent, $26,188 5. Ford Fusion Hybrid, -34.3 percent, $9,301 6. Infiniti Q50, -33.1 percent, $4,938 7. Nissan Altima, -32.6 percent, $7,984 8. Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, -31.4 percent, $9,368 9. Kia Optima, -31.3 percent, $7,574 10. Hyundai Accent, -31.0 percent, $5,136 Overall average: -23.2 percent
Besides benefiting from much lower average prices, buyers of gently used cars can typically take advantage of remaining manufacturer warranties, too.
However, some cars really retain their value after the first year which diminishes such savings and, coupled with a used car’s uncertain history, can make a new car more appealing.
One to buy new, the 2019 Honda HR-V comes with an updated look and new trims including the Sport, pictured, and Touring.
The 10 cars iSeeCars.com suggests to buy new range in price from just 10.5 to 14.7 percent more than a one-year-old model. This group is dominated by compact and subcompact SUVs with the Honda HR-V offering the smallest difference – only $2,260 more than at a year old.
“Subcompacts are a rapidly growing segment because they strike the right balance of cargo room and other SUV perks while maintaining a price tag that is comparable to sedans,” said Phong Ly, CEO of iSeeCars.com.
These vehicles are joined by the midsize Honda Pilot and two compact sedans, the Honda Civic and Subaru Impreza, along with the Toyota Tacoma truck.
Top cars to buy new over used
Includes percentage and dollar price differences 1. Honda HR-V, 10.5 percent, $2,260 2. BMW X1, 11.7 percent, $4,194 3. Subaru Crosstrek, 12.2 percent, $2,978 4. Honda CR-V, 12.2 percent, $3,230 5. Toyota Tacoma, 12.3 percent, $3,891 6. Honda Civic, 12.3 percent, $2,505 7. Honda Pilot, 12.8 percent, $4,518 8. Mazda CX-5, 13.4 percent, $3,457 9. Porsche Macan, 14.5 percent, $8,302 10. Subaru Impreza, 14.7 percent, $3,035 Overall average: 30.2 percent
When financing a purchase, depending on interest rate, the price differences you see here could translate into an even smaller disparity over the course of an average six-year auto loan.
